Acne Treatment

Acne treatment focuses on cleansing the skin, reducing sebum, and eliminating bacteria using ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, retinoids (adapalene), salicylic acid, or azelaic acid. Moderate to severe cases may require medical attention and treatment with oral antibiotics or isotretinoin.

Treatment Options by Severity

  • Mild Acne (blackheads, small pimples):

    1. Topicals: Benzoyl peroxide (kills bacteria), salicylic acid (unclogs pores), retinoids (adapalene) and azelaic acid.

    2. Cleaning: Use mild, oil-free cleansers once or twice a day.

  • Moderate Acne (pustules, papules):

    1. Combination: Topical treatments are often combined with oral antibiotics (doxycycline, minocycline) to reduce inflammation and bacteria.

    2. Other: Oral antiandrogens or contraceptives for women.

  • Severe/Cystic Acne:

    1. Isotretinoin (Accutane): It is the most effective treatment for severe cases, reducing sebum production.

    2. Procedures: Corticosteroid injections, light therapy, or chemical peeling.

Key Tips and Care

  • Patience: Results usually take 6 to 8 weeks.

  • Side effects: Treatments may cause dryness, irritation, redness, and peeling.

  • Sun protection: Many treatments increase sensitivity to the sun.
